Non-narrative text: Art instructional guide
Lesson: Procedural Writing (English/Art - cross-curricular links)
Activity 1
give students a photocopy from the book and have them follow the instructions - let them know that they will not be evaluated on the quality of their work yet.
Think, Pair, Share - with a buddy talk about how east or difficult it was to follow the instructions. List good & bad qualities of the procedure.
Activity 2
Have students pick an art activity (using guidelines you give them) and make your own step by step instructions - no pictures.
Think, Pair, Share - exchange instructions with a buddy and follow their instructions. Talk together about the merits and defects of each others work to make it better.
Post up instructions with the art work around the class for a gallery walk and the teacher will give the students the opportunity to present their work. What they did well, what they could do better - the pairs will do 2 stars and a wish fro their work.
Activity for Grades
Students will make their own art instructions - with pictures in a form similar to what they see in the mentor text.
They will be evaluated for their procedural writing as well as the art they do.
This activity will be "double-dipping" with English and Art. The checklist of requirements will have some basic guidelines for what their art needs to include (based on overall/specific expectations in the curriculum) as well as the necessary components for procedural writing. The requirements for procedural will have been decided and put on an anchor chart during the first couple activities - collectively written with the students.
Double dipping is a great term!
